Frat Boy at the Movies: The Hateful 8

by tonyd on January 1, 2016 at 1:04 am

FratBoyATtheMovies

The eighth move from Quentin Tarantino is a bloody, luxurious ride in the Old West.  He shot the movie in 70mm, but for some reason, all the epic outdoor shots come in the first ten minutes of the film.  Personally, I couldn’t tell the difference between 70mm and digital, but the movie did look nice.

That being said, 8 is a trapped-in-the-cabin movie.  Kurt Russel’s character, the Hangman, is bringing in Jennifer Jason Leigh to hang in Red Rock.  Due to a blizzard, he ends up picking up to passengers, both who were stranded separately on the road.  One is Major Warren (Samuel L. Jackson) and the other is Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins).  They make it to a cabin where a second stage of other travelers are hold over, riding out the storm.

The question is, are they just travelers or are they there to free the Hangman’s prisoner?  The cast is pretty stellar:  Bruce Dern, Michael Madsen, Tim Roth and Zoe Bell to name a few.  One unmentioned actor stands out as the only one that looks way too Hollywood to be standing on a Western set.  Some of the scenes, especially one particular flashback, is a bit over-the-top and gratuitous even for a movie this bloody and full of N-bombs.  Still, it’s well paced and even with it’s three hour length and Intermission, it didn’t feel all that long.

Anyhow, there’s not a whole lot of reason to travel all the way to a movie theater these days, but the Hateful 8 is one, bros.

I give it 9 out of 10 keggers.

Twitter in Focus: Josh Gad

by tonyd on December 30, 2015 at 12:01 am

Hey Bros!

Welcome to Twitter in Focus where media comes to die!  Today’s contestant is a voice of a snowman and was on the Comedians.  He also was in the Book of Mormon.  Let’s see what Josh Gad is tweeting.

@joshgad

December 15th:  “Congrats to #JJAbrams and the entire cast and crew on an incredible film. #ForceAwakens made me a giddy 10 year old all over again.”

Me too, as in that I haven’t seen it because, like at 10, I didn’t drive over to see it.

December 15th:  “Why is movie trailer guy introducing the Republican Debate tonight”

Because this time, it’s personal!  “In a world where only one man can be president and rich white guys say racist things…”

December 15th:  “Is the Republican debate permanently replacing the Phantom of the Opera at the Venetian Hotel?”

No, but it might replace whatever CNN shows at 8pm it’s been on so many times.

December 15th:  “Midway through #ForceAwakens u learn that Kylo Ren is actually Ben Carson who needs the helmet in order to be heard by human ears”

Dude!  Don’t bad mouth that group of people!  The Sith are a very proud culture!

December 16th:  “3 nonspoiler favorite things about #ForceAwakens. New cast is INCREDIBLE, Harrison is everything & the feel of the movie is old school magic”

What?!  Harrison Ford is in it?!  Thanks a lot, Mr. No-spoiler!

December 16th:  “I definitely need to brush up on my @taylorswift13 so the next time my daughter says “we got bad blood” to me, I don’t call my therapist.”

Well, as long as it isn’t a reference to Game of Thrones, you’re good.

December 18th:  “#ForceAwakens 2nd time even better. #StarWars is truly back”

Jeez, look at “Mr. Hollywood” seeing movies twice.

December 20th:  “My friend @deliahauser is a modern day #marthastewart. The girl can literally do anything. This… https://www.instagram.com/p/_h1bXejvlj/”

That’s a very Christmasy cake.

December 24th:  “I tried desperately to get my daughters to build a Lego #StarWars X-Wing with me. Clearly I lost… https://www.instagram.com/p/_sFS8ADvrF/”

C’mon.  At least you’re in the toy they play with.

December 25th:  “Merry Christmas! Or as I prefer to call it the “night before the slaughter of the wrapping paper.” https://www.instagram.com/p/_tH-j1jvuR/”

Nice tree.  Very trim.

December 25th:  “Favorite gift by far. New Flying #milleniumfalcon. Gift expensive. Father in law’s expression… https://www.instagram.com/p/_vSAhujvg7/”

Wow, that is pretty badass.

December 28th:  “HatefulEight Roadshow is everything you want it to be and more. Program in hand, Overture, intermission. All of it is sweet bliss.”

Speaking of badass, I gotta see this movie.

Okay, let’s rate Josh’s tweets.  Definitely very genuine.  Not a lot of behind-the-scenes, but hey, it’s the holidays.  I give Josh’s Twitter an 8 for Insanity, a 7 for Mustness and a 9 for Style.  That’s an overall score of 8.  Follow Josh.

And if you have a suggestion for Twitter in Focus, email me here.

Webcomic Review: Dodgy Comics

by tonyd on December 28, 2015 at 12:01 am

SF Tony Avatar

Webcomic:  Dodgy Comics

Creators:   Ruy Platt and Phou Camvan

Format:  various, mostly black and white and multi-panel

Updates:  Monday, Wednesday and Friday

Genre:  Comedy, science fiction, superhero

Themes:  Video games, movies, humor, comics

Characters:  Many, many characters

Archive:  Begins here.

Lots of different comics here, which I like a lot for obvious reasons.  It’s a great way to go because if fans don’t like one concept, they can check out another.  Plus it’s easier to end stories and start something new.  I read through Space Enablers.  It’s funny.  Makes light of video games and comics using aliens and I liked the look of it.  The Assorted was good too.  One panel gags.  There’s lots to check out here.

Guess the issue I have with the site is the navigation, which is something we’ve struggled with on both my sites.  Once you get a few different titles, you gotta be able to see them all.  The guys could use some buttons on the front page for each comic.  They have three, which is like the three major divisions.  I wouldn’t mind seeing text links of everything on the side.  I mean, the navigation’s not bad, but the archive page is a little too spread out.  Again, I’ve struggled with the same exact issues, so I’m not exactly sure of the answer.  Individual page links are useless for a narrative unless you bookmark where you left off.  But for gag-a-day stuff, it might make sense because each one is it’s own story.

That all being said, I don’t have the answers, but I do have the links and this is one you should check out.  Lots of different stuff.

Your Last Fratoscope of 2015

by tonyd on December 27, 2015 at 12:01 am

FratoScopeHeader

If your birthday is this week:  No one has any money to buy you birthday gifts, so enjoy those hug coupons.

Aries:  You will fly fish inappropriately.

Taurus:  The stars say, keep drinking that egg nog.  It won’t last the week.

Gemini:  Your genie takes the week off and your Katy Perry clone takes the opportunity to break up with you.

Lemini:  Your animal spirit will, sadly, have to be put down.

Cancer:  You subscription to Playboy will be canceled as the girls in the magazine don’t like the idea of you looking at them.

Leo:  This week, you won’t go into 2016 without a kiss because the dog will be licking your face as you’re passed out drunk.

Virgo:  Will you please just go see Star Wars so the rest of us can talk about it?!

Libra:  You’ll find out that stripper didn’t love you, just your various passwords and pin numbers.

Scorpio:  You will replace your mattress again, but lucky you, the tenth replacement is free!

Sagittarius:  Get your hands out of your pants, this is a comedy site and not sexy at all you weirdo.

Capricorn:  Your Facebook picture will be used in an ad as the “before” person.

Aquarius:  You will eat an extremely unhealthy amount of mustard this week.

Pisces:  All your hard work finally pays off, unfortunately you put all that hard work into video games again, so your imagined gains are just virtual nothing.  However, Mario seems really happy.
