Movies You Missed: The Drop

One of James Gandolfini’s last films, The Drop features amazing performances, particularly by Tom Hardy.  And Noomi Rapace is no slouch in this movie either.  Set in Brooklyn, it’s about a bartender and his cousin, Marv (Gandolfini).  He owns a bar that’s a drop for the local organized crime family to drop off money.  The bar changes all the time, but when it happens, it’s important that the bar owner stay alert.  Bob (Hardy), as the bartender, just wants to get by, but when the bar gets robbed after a drop, things change.

It’s hard to talk about the plot of the movie without giving away the amazing ending, but trust me, the final scene is completely worth it.  The entire story builds to that moment and Hardy nails it.  Gandolfini is like a less successful, Tony Soprano.  A friend recommended the movie and he was totally right.  It’s pretty gripping, great pacing—  It’s a really a perfect crime movie.  Director Michael Roskam and screenwriter Dennis Lehane (who wrote the short story on which it is based), did a fantastic job on all fronts.

Don’t miss Gandolfini’s last film.  He went out on a great one.  It’s currently playing on HBO.

by tonyd on August 26, 2015 at 12:01 am

Hey Bros!

Welcome to Twitter in Focus where media comes to die!  Today’s contestant is the creator of Bob’s Burgers, Lucy: Daughter of the Devil, Home Movies and he worked on Dr. Katz— Jon Benjamin’s best buddy, Loren Bouchard!

@lorenbouchard

July 29th:  “20 Bob’s tattoos http://blog.tattoodo.com/2015/07/20-bobs-burgers-tattoo-tina-belcher-approve/ …”

Awesome, not the show must stay on forever so these tattoos remain relevant.

August 3rd:  ““Embroidered Zoetrope” by @elliot_schultz on @Vimeo https://vimeo.com/133396066”

Neat.

August 3rd:  “Rain is sizzling bacon, cars are lions roaring: the art of sound in movies | Jordan Kisner http://gu.com/p/4ap9h/stw”

Mmm, rain bacon.

August 5th:  “Now I’m spoiled. I’m spoiled rotten. https://instagram.com/p/6BqXxxyXlG/”

It’s good to be famous.

August 9th:  “Netflix TV Show Pick of the Week: Bob’s Burgers http://netflixlife.com/2015/08/09/netflix-tv-show-pick-of-the-week-bobs-burgers/ …”

Definitely a good place to get caught up on the show and binge watch it.

August 12th:  “‘Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist’ Is Older But Still Wise and Just As Funny | PopMatters http://www.popmatters.com/column/195518-dr.-katz-professional-therapist-is-older-but-still-wise-and-just-as-/ …”

Loved that show.  Miss it.

August 23rd:  “clever writers write those. jim and i are old farts. ”

RE: the building names.  So hard to read with one pass on the credits.  You gotta be quick.

August 23rd:  “”surrender” by cheap trick? ”

RE: a Louise theme.  Yeah, I could see that.

Okay, let’s rate Loren’s tweets.  Interesting stuff.  I give him a 7 for Mustness, an 8 for Insanity and a 9 for Style.  That’s an overall score of 8.  Follow Loren and watch his awesome shows.

And if you have a suggestion for Twitter in Focus, email me here.

Webcomic Review: The Sorrowful Putto of Prague

by tonyd on August 24, 2015 at 12:01 am

SF Tony Avatar

Webcomic:  The Sorrowful Putto of Prague

Creator:   James Stafford, AJ Bernardo and others

Format:  Comic book pages, some color

Updates:  About twice a month

Genre:  Supernatural, superhero, fantasy

Themes:  History, Prague, magic

Characters:  Xavier the Putto, The Golem of Prague, Prague

Archive:  Begins April 25, 2014

I was hanging out on the message boards for thewebcomiclist.com, when I noticed someone posting about this comic.  I don’t normally take requests, but this was a great tip.  The Sorrowful Putto of Prague is a webcomic you can’t stop reading.  Top notch artwork and writing, Putto centers around a five centuries old cherub that protects the City of Prague.  He doesn’t always win, as the creature has lived through World War 2 and Nazi occupation, as well as the Soviet era.  It also had the Golem of Prague and a few other supernatural creatures.

Probably my only problem with the comic is the website.  It’s hard to read the lettering unless you click on the page and zoom in.  If I were James, I’d display the pages bigger or make the lettering bigger.  Still, it’s worth the extra clicking.  Bernando’s artwork is definitely professional and Stafford’s stories (it’s done in a series of short stories) are interesting and unpredictable.  The library is pretty short, but the quality is not to be denied.  Don’t miss this awesome webcomic.
