Webcomic Review: Bigfoot Justice

Webcomic:  Bigfoot Justice

Creator:   Mike Salcedo

Format:   Color, one to four panel strips

Updates:  Fridays

Genre:  Comedy, puns, absurdity

Themes:  Race, pot, loneliness, masturbation, etc.

Characters:  The creator, his friend and various supporting characters

Archive:  Begins here in 2014

Bigfoot Justice is genre of webcomic I like to call “hipster comic strip”.  It tends to have a non-sequitur title and is a gag-a-day type strip.  It tends to be done by an artist/writer who is young, lives alone and does a lot of gags about being in your 20’s.  The great thing about hipster comic strips is that the creator is young, new and connects well with the webcomic audience at large.  The only real downside is, it’s hard for webcomics to accumulate an audience because of the title.  Titles are important and it can make people judge the comic strip before they even read it.  I don’t know, it just bugs me.

Salcedo’s humor is pretty on the mark.  For me personally, I’d say 8 out of 10 for the jokes.  The artwork is solid enough for comedy and getting better.  I like the style.  His format jumps around from three panels, to one and then more than three.  It doesn’t bother me, but he may have trouble down the road putting together a print book if he decides.  The comic only started up last year (I think), so the library is small enough to catch up on quick.  I think this one is going somewhere so hop on board early.  Salcedo’s style is emerging and it’s always an interesting process to watch.

Twitter in Focus: Riki Lindhome

by tonyd on July 22, 2015 at 1:40 am

Hey Bros!

Welcome to Twitter in Focus where media comes to die!  Today’s contestant is Riki Lindhome, star of the Comedy Central show, Another Period.  She’s funny on the show and funny in her YouTube videos, let’s see what she’s tweeting.

@rickilindhome

July 20th:  “For those of you who missed Comic Con, here is a clip of Joss Whedon interviewing the cast of #AnotherPeriod! http://on.cc.com/1GqjjE2”

I look forward to the Another Period comic book.

July 20th:  “It’s #AnotherPeriod night on @midnight! Watch me and the lovely michaelianblack & @jasonritter… https://instagram.com/p/5YVBeWpcoc/”

Always a fun show.  Created by the Marquis de Sainsbury, AKA: Thomas Lennon.

12 hours ago:  “Fun Fact: If you call someone you’re dating “the love of my life” on Instagram, you will break up!”

Ouch.  Someone had a break up.

12 hours ago:  “I am so excited about tonight’s episode of #AnotherPeriod! There is masturbation therapy, homosexual… https://instagram.com/p/5aDiJrJcsT/”

Aw, missed that one. Gotta catch it on On Demand.

9 hours ago:  “See @katemicucci and @rikilindhome battle it out on tonight’s episode of #AnotherPeriod! 10:30 on… https://instagram.com/p/5aTk4rsJe7/”

Ah, your partner in crime.

8 hours ago:  “So excited for tonight’s guest stars! @katemicucci @actorbrianwhite #ChrisParnell & the return of the great @DavidKoechner! #AnotherPeriod”

You got a lot of famous actors for this show.

3 hours ago:  “EAST COAST! A new episode of #AnotherPeriod is happening right now. Get your cocaine wine and turn on @ComedyCentral!”

Cocaine wine is why I missed the last two episodes.  Speaking of which, gotta talk to my cocaine wine dealer.

1 hour ago:  “On tonight’s episode, Frederick vies for the title of dumbest Bellacourt. @JasonRitter @lauren_ash #RocksAreAlive  ”

Cool.  I gotta get caught up.  Again, assuming the cocaine wine doesn’t derail me.

9 minutes ago:  “Ten minutes until a brand new episode of #AnotherPeriod! Sigmund Freud asks the tough questions: Name, age, gay? ”

Wow, that’s gonna be a ton of dick jokes.

Okay let’s rate Riki’s tweets. I can forgive the plugs as her show is new and good.  A little behind the scenes and possible a very personal tweet, not sure.  Lots of potential here.  I give her a 9 for Style, a 9 for Insanity and a 9 for Mustness.  That’s an overall score of 9.  Follow Riki.

And if you have a suggestion for Twitter in Focus, email me here.

Webcomic Review: Pepper & Carrot

by tonyd on July 20, 2015 at 1:07 am

SF Tony Avatar

Webcomic:  Pepper & Carrot

Creator:   David Revoy

Format:   Color, painted, multimedia

Updates:  About an issue per month

Genre:  Comedy, cuteness, fantasy

Themes:  Cats, witches, growing up

Characters:  Peter, Carrot, Miss Saffron

Archive:  Begins May 2014

An ambitious website and webcomic, Pepper & Carrot are about a cute, little girl witch and her companion cat, Carrot.  The panels appear to be full painted and each installment is a full story.  Revoy also is pushing the concept of direct support from fans via his site, along with the concept of making Pepper & Carrot and open source project.  You can read about his concept here.  I hope it works for him, the artwork is pretty sweet.

This is definitely something you could show to little kids and adults can read it without insulting their intelligence.  Pepper is a country witch who is poor, she’s also struggling with school and being popular.  The eighth installment was particularly good, I felt.  There’s also a bonus webcomic which was posted on Reddit recently, which is how I found out about it.  So check out Pepper & Carrot and perhaps donate or participate or just read it.  It’s translated into every language, which isn’t a bad idea either.  I’d hire this guy to design my website in a second.  It’s pretty slick.
