Frat Boy At the Movies: A Million Ways to Die in the West

by tonyd on June 6, 2014 at 12:01 am

FratBoyATtheMovies

Seth McFarlane is back starring and directing in A Million Ways to Die in the West.  I read a few pretty bad reviews of this movie, but as I suspected, the usual crowd of critics panned it mostly for its crass humor.

Have they never seen an episode of Family Guy?

That isn’t to say the movie doesn’t have faults.  McFarlane’s acting is okay, but not a stand out.  He wisely surrounds himself with solid actors like Charlize Theron and Liam Neeson, who pick up most of the slack.  (One wonders if someone like Jesse Eisenberg would’ve knocked the whole neurotic guy in the west thing out of the park though.)  I think if Seth just worked on a few facial expressions, he’d emote a heckuva lot better.  But he is directing too, so that’s a lot of pressure.

The writing and direction are rock solid.  There are some amazing celebrity cameos.  Neil Patrick Harris does a great turn as a rival suitor for McFarlane’s girl.  Giovanni Ribisi is hilarious as his best friend who is in love with a prostitute.  And the characters and the story in general pays off.

Some of the jokes, especially the racial ones, you’ve heard like a million times on Family Guy.  McFarlane does a precarious balancing act between comedy with the characters in the Old West and purpose anachronisms.  I thought there were way more hits than misses overall.  Some of the screenplay has really smart moments and little tidbits of information.  But at some point most of that goes out the window in favor of the fart jokes, which are mostly funny, but again, one wonders what would’ve happened if McFarlane had stayed on the first path.  No doubt there was a bit of a battle between keeping a lot of the smart humor vs. what McFarlane fans would expect in the realm of dick jokes.  I could see why that would annoy a critic, but I still liked it.

Go see A Million Ways to Die in the West, bros.  The laugh to dollar ratio is solid.  I give it 8 out of 10 keggers.

Twitter in Focus: John Oliver

by tonyd on June 4, 2014 at 12:01 am

Hey Bros!

Welcome to Twitter in Focus where media comes to die!  Today’s contestant is John Oliver!  Formerly of the Daily Show, now with his own show on HBO.  He’s funny when doing fake news, let’s see what’s he’s tweeting.

@iamjohnoliver

April 29th:  “If you live in the UK, first…hello, how are you? And second…@LastWeekTonight is on Sky Atlantic tonight at 6pm.”

Sky Atlantic sounds like the channel you watch on a plane.  Crazy English television.  Don’t forget your license!

April 29th:  “I meant 11pm. It’s on 11pm. Not 6pm. 11pm. When I said 6pm, I was mistaken. It is on at 11pm. The Sky Atlantic part is still true.”

Unless you have the Internet, in which case, fuck the time.

May 5th:  “Pom Wonderful sent @lastweektonight an amazing thank you letter after we made fun of them last week – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bml8KwCmob8 …”

Hmm, Pom does have a sense of humor.

May 9th:  “Goodbye, Greendale. That was a lot of fun.”

Aww.  Oliver was one of the best characters on that show.

May 9th:  “R.I.P Community. Also, sperm.”

Oh, no.  Working on that show cost more that we thought!

May 10th:  “I’m a guest voice on The Simpsons tomorrow night – a new neighbor called Booth Wilkes-John. I’m very excited. “

Jesus, I hope you get away with your testes in tact.

May 11th:  “Tonight! HBO! New Episode of @LastWeekTonight! I promise it will be fun! That promise is non-binding! That is all!”

It’s binding!  It’s Twitter!  You said it!

May 18th:  “Tonight at 11.05 on HBO, brand new @LastWeekTonight. Almost no full frontal male nudity this week – that is almost a promise.”

Wow, Game of Thrones is way more influential than I thought.

May 18th:  “OK. I presume everyone is already joining in….#mutuallyassuredhumiliation…3…2…1…1…1…. “

Ouch.  That’s worse than Colbert’s old pics.

May 18th:  “Here is the other one…#mutuallyassuredhumiliation… “

Did your parents have so many kids that they needed to label them?

May 18th:  “#mutuallyassuredhumiliation…. “

That face says, “Please, don’t make me wear this.”

June 1st:  “Tonight at 11 @LastWeekTonight returns with net neutrality, Greek neo-Nazis and confetti cannons. What better way to lull you to sleep?”

Nazis do tend to be very boring.

8 hours ago:  “Whoops. It seems that you’ve all crashed part of the FCC website. I hope you’re proud of yourselves. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpbOEoRrHyU …“

A brilliant bit.  Everyone’s passing this around.

Okay, let’s rate John’s tweets.  Lots of plugs, but he at least worked material in them.  Well done.  I give him a 6 for Mustness, a 9 for Style and a 9 for Insanity.  That’s an overall score of 8.  Watch John’s Last Week Tonight on HBO.
