Frat Boy At the Movies: A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas in 3D

by tonyd on November 7, 2011 at 3:06 am

Harold and Kumar 3 does everything right that Harold and Kumar 2 did wrong.  I guess the filmmakers had painted themselves into a corner with the end of the first movie, only to move completely away from it during the second.  I did have to admire that someone was doing comedy about Guantanamo Bay.  But whereas HK2 unraveled, HK3 sticks to what amounts to a pretty standard plot of friendship and reconciliation.

Harold and Kumar, no longer buddies, each have their own lives.  Harold is living the good life with his hot wife, while trying to impress his father-in-law, while Kumar continues his stoner/slacker lifestyle.  When a mysterious package arrives, the duo are brought back together.  Besides John Cho, Kal Penn and Neil Patrick Harris, the cast is beefed up with the appearance of Thomas Lennon as the nerdy dad-friend of Harold, Danny Trejo as the father-in-law and Amir Blumenfeld from Collegehumor as Kumar’s idiot friend.  And Bobby Lee has a funny bit in the beginning.

Probably my favorite bit is the explanation of why NPH is gay, followed closely by the explanation of why he’s still alive.

It doesn’t capture the magic of one, but it holds together a lot better than 2.  It feels like the franchise could go one more, dare I say.  Why not?  It is, what it is; a movie that’s funny and doesn’t take itself too seriously.  If you’re looking for something to go see and be really, really high while watching it, I give it a 10 out of 10 keggers.  If you’re sober, I give it a 7 out of 10.

Your Fratoscope: November 6, 2011

by tonyd on November 6, 2011 at 12:01 am

If your birthday is this week:    Your plan to over buy candy for Halloween worked perfectly, except for the diabetes.

Aries:  You will be sued for destroying the scenic beauty of a public place after visiting a nude beach.  Maybe try doing some sit ups.

Taurus:  You will read a horoscope that will be untrue.

Gemini:   Your plan to “Occupy Kitchen” does nothing to get your roommate to do the dishes.

Lemini :   Your dog wants to go out.  He’d like to go to a moderately priced restaurant and see a movie.

Cancer:   The stars say, take a moment to inventory your life.  You’re going to be robbed soon.

Leo:  Your boss notices the fishnet stockings you wore to work.  Apparently, they frown upon this kind of thing at the brokerage firm.

Virgo:   This week, you’ll invent a new excuse to cheat on your girlfriend involving zombies.

Libra:   You really should stop dating that Virgo.

Scorpio:  You’ll have sex with a Virgo in zombie make up.

Sagittarius:   You’ll discover that no one wants to attend a convention dedicated to the TV show Webster.

Capricorn:   According to the stars, David Duchovny will come to your house and attempt to prove you’re Bigfoot.  Maybe you should shave.

Aquarius:   Your attempt at depositing your Monopoly winnings at Bank of America fails.

Pisces:   You will watch far too many cartoons and then have some pie.
