Movies You Missed: Nightcrawler

by tonyd on February 20, 2015 at 12:01 am

Jake Gyllenhaal stars at Louis Bloom, the creepiest guy in L.A., who falls into the world of being a freelance news stringer. Taking the phrase “if it bleeds, it leads” to the logical extreme in this movie, as the relentless Louis Bloom, Gyllenhaal’s character has an almost sociopathic drive. Rene Russo plays the news producer that eggs him on and then eventually lives to regret it.

You’re not going to be blown away by the plot here, but the tension feels very real and Gyllenhaal’s performance is pretty hypnotic. You get the feeling that you don’t know what’s going to happen next, kind of the same vibe you get from DeNiro in Taxi Driver. Louis Bloom is damaged, but he’s also a master manipulator and he makes short work of Bill Paxton’s character, a rival stringer.

I couldn’t stop watching, but this movie probably isn’t for everyone. I recommend you rent it now that it’s on Comcast On-Demand.

Movies You Missed: St. Vincent

by tonyd on February 20, 2015 at 12:01 am

Bill Murray plays Vincent, a grumpy old man and War Vet that’s rotting away in a Brooklyn suburb. Melissa McCarthy plays the mother of Oliver, Jaeden Lieberher, the both of who just moved next door to him. Vincent is flat broke and owes every one money and ends up babysitting Oliver for some quick cash.

What follows is a nice story about a drunken, gambling old guy that teaches the young kid and in turn learns something about himself. Oh and Naomi Watts as a Russian stripper, Chris O’Dowd as the priest and Terrance Howard as a loan shark named Zucko. It’s not a bad movie and Murray’s performance (and the rest of the cast) is excellent. It’s funny, touching and pretty standard. Not a bad way to kill 90 minutes. A perfect rental on Comcast On-Demand for $4.99.

Twitter in Focus: Maurice Lamarche

by tonyd on February 18, 2015 at 12:01 am

Hey Bros!

Welcome to Twitter in Focus where media comes to die.  Today’s contestant is Maurice Lamarche, voice of the Brain from Pinky and the Brain, as well as a bunch of other cartoon characters.  Let’s see what he’s tweeting.

@MAURICELAMARCHE

January 15th:  “Shopping at this ethnic mkt 2nite almost turned me vegan. I think the packaged lamb face looking like Benjamin Raspail’s head did the trick.”

Wow, talk about your head cheese.

January 15th:  “How ethnic, you ask? This place actually had a hookah aisle. I sh*t you not”

Finally, a local place to score my opium.

January 17th:  “Guy in front of me in line at #AcmeComedyTheatre just said “There are no bad seats here”. Obviously, he wasn’t talking to my 290 lb. ass.”

I’m reading most of this in the voice of The Brain, but that one I read in your killer Orson Wells impersonation.

January 20th:  “This is freakin’ hilarious! Done by my friend @travisbraun. Please give it your vote so it’ll air during SuperBowl! https://crashthesuperbowl.doritos.com/finalists#/6516”

Man, that gets more competitive every year.

February 3rd:  “Read an article on how we shower too often. A compromise? Cilantro-based body spray. That way at least we smell like soap to 10% of humans.”

Hmm, can’t risk it.  If I smell like cilantro I might get hungry and try to eat my own arm.

February 11th:  “So grateful to have just guest-voiced on #TheSimpsons, and to be voice-directed by the busiest brilliantly funny man in animation, @AlJean!”

Wow, you’re in a ton of stuff I watch.

Okay, let’s rate Maurice’s tweets.  He’s a busy voice, so you can’t blame him for not updating all that much.  I like the behind-the-scenes stuff.  I give him a 7 for Mustness, an 8 for Insanity and a 9 for Style.  That’s an overall score of 8.  When you ask, what are we going to do tonight?  Your answer should be, the same thing we do every night, Pinky, follow Maurice.

And if you have a suggestion for Twitter in Focus, email me here.

Webcomic Review: The Oatmeal

by tonyd on February 16, 2015 at 12:01 am

SF Tony Avatar

Webcomic:  The Oatmeal

Creator:  Matthew Inman

Format:  One or more panels stand alone comics, sometimes prose and illustration, multi-media, videos, etc.

Updates:  About weekly?

Genre:  Comedy, absurdist, slice-of-life, autobiographical

Themes:  Work, life, weird facts,

Characters:  Matthew, animals, various people

Archive:  Beginning sometime in 2009

Matthew Inman created the Oatmeal as a place for his comics and various merchandise including greeting cards, prints and books.  The site is not a typical webcomic site.  The comics are stand alones, featuring whatever subject pops into Inman’s mind.  Sometimes the comics are autobiographical, like the one about his dog.  Other times they are about something weird like his relationship with fruit.  Usually funny, sometimes touching or education, the Oatmeal is almost always entertaining.

Inman’s site is more of a multimedia device designed to sell his merch and promote his causes.  Near as I can see, the comics aren’t dated, probably because he updates whenever he’s finished a comic.  According to Wikipedia, he spends about three days working on a typical comic.  The Oatmeal is enormously popular, which is why Inman’s email sometimes overwhelms him.  From a design point, I feel like every time I visit the Oatmeal it’s the first time, as the comics aren’t organized in any particular order other than most recent and most popular.  Since they are stand alone, I’m not sure that even matters.  The important thing is, the site is good and worth visiting.

Some might argue that the Oatmeal is not really a webcomic site, but I think that’s just splitting hairs.  Whether he updates regularly or whenever, it’s usually worth a click.  It’s one of the few webcomic sites that I go out of my way to check up on.
