Frat Boy at the Movies: Hail, Caesar!

by tonyd on February 6, 2016 at 12:36 am

FratBoyATtheMovies

The Coen Brothers are back with a movie about old time Hollywood.  Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson, Jonah Hill and Newman (Wayne Knight) star.  The premise: Eddie Mannix (Brolin) is a movie exec trying to keep the studio’s various secrets spilling out while keeping up production.  When their star is kidnapped, he has to get him back.

A solid Coen Brothers entry, but not mind-blowing.  Probably too many elements to digest in the plot, but it does come together.  The ending is kinda funny, but ultimately anti-climatic.  Could’ve been funnier or weirder or had more action, but still solid.  I don’t know, maybe my expectations were too high.  Still, worth seeing.  50/50 in a theater, but definitely by rental.  The movie also includes one of the gayest scenes ever created in cinema.

I give Hail, Caesar! 7 out of 10 keggers.

Twitter in Focus: Jerrod Carmichael

by tonyd on February 3, 2016 at 12:01 am

Hey Bros!

Welcome to Twitter in Focus where media comes to die!  Today’s contestant is comedian, Jerrod Carmichael, who you might remember from the endless mentions on Tosh.0.  Let’s see what he’s tweeting.

@NortoriousROD

January 20th:  “Largo! Come to Largo! This Friday. Me and funny friends and all of that stuff people love. 8p.”

Dammit.  Too late.  Maybe next time.

January 22nd:  “How could you not come to this? http://www.largo-la.com/event/1037743-jerrod-carmichael-friends-los-angeles/ …”

I’m on the East Coast.  Have to wait until A.C.

January 22nd:  “pic.twitter.com/l2yvFWWWsf”

I could watch this.

January 25th:  “Happy Birthday Jim! @JamarNeighbors ”

No idea, but Happy Birthday anyway.

January 27th:  “pic.twitter.com/DRNYtSxgJH”

He’s really big on not having himself pictured.

January 29th:  “Did we ever figure out who Arianna Huffington is exactly?”

The voice of a cartoon bear.

Okay, let’s rate Jerrod’s tweets.  Full of plugs, but understandable since he’s show’s about to premiere.  I would like to see more behind-the-scenes stuff, but I’m willing to give the show a shot.  I mean, if it’s half as funny as Tosh, I’m in.  Plus David Alan Grier.  Can’t go wrong.

I give Jerrod a 7 for Style, 7 for Mustness and a 7 for Insanity.   An overall score of 7, follow Jerrod.

And if you have a suggestion for Twitter in Focus, email here.

Webcomic Review: Waffles & Pancakes

by tonyd on February 1, 2016 at 12:01 am

SF Tony Avatar

Webcomic: Waffles & Pancakes

Creators:   D.T. Saranya

Format:  color comic, 3+ panels

Updates:  Sundays

Genre:  Slice of life, college

Themes:  Friendship, character study, comedy

Characters:  Aiden, Kaia,

Archive:  Begins December 21, 2015.

Waffles & Pancakes is a bit of a hipster comic that could use a better title.  Other than that, it’s quite well done.  It’s about two lifelong friends (Aiden and Kaia), who are both very different.  Aiden is a bit of a goof, but Kaia is dark and brooding.  Together, they go to college where they are figuring things out.  D.T. is only up to 18 installments, so now is perfect time to get on board.

I’m loving the history of these two characters and the interesting thoughts that run through Aiden’s head.  The artwork is solid and is bound to get better.  I would like to see it go more than once a week, but the quality is definitely there.  The nice thing about a webcomic like this, you can really explore the main two characters and their long history just adds to the enjoyment.  Bookmark this one.  I predict big things if D.T. sticks with it.
