Going Clear is a documentary about Scientology, it’s founding and the celebrities that are a part of it.  If you go on YouTube, you can find a lot of documentaries on the subject that cover a lot of the same ground, but this one really goes into detail.  Besides going into the deep background of L. Ron Hubbard, including his wife, who had a lot to say about the church’s founding.

The rest of the documentary has interviews with former members, including screenwriter, Paul Haggis.  Haggis seems like a really intelligent guy and his turning point is one of the great moments in the documentary.  But the favorite part of this film is the focus on John Travolta and Tom Cruise.  According to the documentary, the church goes to amazing lengths to keep the celebrities (and just about anyone else) under their sway.  Some of the biggest names in the church have left and are in this documentary exposing a lot of behind-the-scenes.  You get a taste of it in other documentaries, but executives this high up in the church make the accusations devastating.

It’s pretty amazing and you should see it.  It’s on HBO on On-Demand.  I give it 9 out of 10 keggers.
