The Cohen Brothers are back with their latest offering.  A Serious Man centers around a Jewish Physics professor in the late 60’s whose life is falling apart.  It’s basically a more modern telling of the trials of Job, but in this case Job is Larry Gopnik.

His wife is leaving him for another man, his kids don’t listen and his tenure is on the line as one of his students is trying to bribe him for a better grade.  It’s unfair to compare a Cohen Brothers movie even to other Cohen Bros flicks, as they are often so different, but I would say it’s not quite as funny as Big Lewbowski, but funnier than Burn After Reading.

It’s an interesting look at Jewish American culture, American culture and the Hell that is suburbia.  (Spoilers)  Ultimately, it’s about mystery and the first short dramatized Jewish proverb story sets the tone for what will happen to Larry.  The final scene will give you something to think about, but only if you’re paying attention.  It took me a few hours and a couple of other reviews, but I got it.

Totally worth seeing.  Although be warned the ending is a bit abrupt like No Country for Old Men, but I think the movie’s message is easier to grasp.  I give A Serious Man 8 out of 10 keggers.   As a bonus, there is some nudity and a quality bush shot. Enjoy!
