Starring Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer, Melanie Laurent and a Jack Russel Terrier, Beginners is about relationships.  Directed by Mike Mills, the movie has a pretty European feel, which means it’s kind of boring unless you like movies about relationships.

The movie is relentless in its appeal to hipsters.  It’s quirky, somewhat ironic and Oliver is just kind of meandering through his life unable to deal with it. Oliver is dealing with his dying father and a new romance.  The trailer gives you the idea that it might be a quirky, funny movie.  It has amusing moments, but its mostly quirky and uncomfortable.

Although it wasn’t bad to watch: the characters are distinct, the acting is good and the editing is interesting— For me, it’s too realistic. I already deal with death and relationships in real life, I just don’t go to the movies to see more of it.

It’s definitely more of a chick flick, in that it mostly centers on an awkward romance and ‘life-goes-on’ kind of deal. I give it 4 out of 10 keggers. On the chick flick scale, it would be more like a 6.
